... Were they poisoned?

[ she makes a little disgusted noise. ]

I said it was iron, didn't I? So yeah.

[Checking her back to see if they... came out?]

Oh...

[ There are exit wounds.

The little girl pipes up. ]

We're part of faerie. Iron poisons us, even when we're part human, too.

[at least they're not still in her then. She makes pads out of the bandages and places them over the openings and binding them securely into place.]

I... don't know what to do help with poisoning. I'm sorry.

[ The teenager shrugs one shoulder ]

It can't kill me any more than it already has.

[ beat ]

Thanks. I guess.

It's not a problem. Is that too tight?

[ she shakes her head and lowers her shirt ]

I'm still not supposed to let you upstairs, though. Not without permission.

Can you give me permission?

[ Dare shakes her head and nods towards the intercom ]

Gotta call up.

[She glances at the intercom and back at Dare.]

Call? I... uh. I guess I should say most technology is... not something I'm familiar with.

Whatever.

[ Dare shrugs ]

I guess I can ask, though, if you want.

I'd really appreciate that, Dare. Thank you.

[ Dare gets up and presses the call button. The conversation she has is somehow inaudible, despite being so nearby, and relatively brief. She turns back to you when she's released the button ]

Boss says you can go up.

Your boss?

The Powers That Be, the eye in the sky, Big Brother, whatever. The people in charge said yes.

[ she jerks her thumb over her shoulder ]

If either of you are going up, you should probably do it before they change their minds.

[She reaches over to lay a hand on Dare's shoulder and offers her another roll of bandages.]

I'll go. I appreciate your help. You should hold onto this in case those get bloody.

[ The little girl pipes up ]

Would you like me to come? I'm familiar with most of the places you'll find here.

Sure. What's your name?

[Heading for the stairs to go on up.]

[ She trots after you, feet padding softly on the wood ]

Karen. It's nice to meet you.

[ The staircase is dark and steep, and when you get to the top, you're faced with a poorly-lit hallway. On the right-hand side of the hallway are three identical, unmarked doors, and on the left is one door - identical to the others but for a battered plaque that says "Office". ]

["Boss" and "office" seem like they would go together so heading for that door. She knocks.]

It's nice to meet you too.

[ That would seem right, but there is nothing but silence behind the door. Trying to open the door reveals that it's locked. There is a keyhole in the knob. ]

[Since she doesn't know how to pick a lock she frowns and turns to look at the three doors on the opposite side of the hall.]

I didn't expect to be playing games with the Boss person.

It's not games, really. It's just the way things are. You need a key to open a locked door.

Yeah. The game is finding it.

[Going to the first door from the stairs and knocking before she tries the knob.]
