Oh... those are probably not things to get burned.

[She smooths the pages out and sets them with the one with Dog's name on it.]

Probably not.

[looking around for somewhere safe to put the pages and maybe some blank pages that could be used to start the fire.]

[ There is a leatherbound journal on the heart, just within reach ]

[Picking that up and thumbing through it.]

[ The leather of the journal has been dyed amethyst-purple, and seems to be worn from use. Flipping open the journal reveals that a number of pages have been torn out throughout the front pages, clearly used as kindling for the unlit fire. The remaining pages each have a single name written on them in the same unsteady hand:

Night, Sky, Ashes, Kitten, Rider, Jaina, Sage, Beauty

There are a number of blank pages still in the book. ]

[She'll tuck the pages back into the book, and stands to move the journal to the couch cushion. Turning she digs through her pockets pulling out a handkerchief and a knife. She squats down, taking minute to tear the cloth into strips and pry a large splinter off the wood. She uses them to make a fire starter before placing it into the fireplace before touching the flame of the candelabra to it to get the fire going.]

[ The fire catches easily, and the room warms. The feeling of loneliness lifts a bit. ]

That's better.

[She'll go check out the bookcase next.]

[ There are only a handful of books on the shelves. All the titles are fairy tales or Shakespearian plays. A Midsummer Night's Dream and Tam Lin seem to be the most worn. ]

[Pulls out Tam Lin first because she doesn't recognize it at all.]

[ The book is full of different variations of the ballad of Tam Lin ]

[Weeeelllllllll she'll read through the first one perhaps, but she'll put it back on the shelf after that. Midsummer Night's Dream gets glanced at as well.]

[ Nothing special, just Shakespeare. ]

[That gets less of a look over once she realizes it's a play. Turning to the kitchen, she'll go over to start the fire going so she can heat the kettle for tea.]

[ The warmth from the two fires and the tea kettle spread out, the negative feelings lifting as the room becomes warm, bright, and comfortable.

The kettle settles to boil and remains at a state of "just about to whistle" for far too long to be normal. Perhaps it's meant to be kept waiting. ]

[Well, that's fine and somehow seems proper. She'll check the vase next and add water if it needs some, but she's kind of dubious as to how much help that will be.]

[ No water is needed. Everything seems in order here.

Karen gets up and stretches. ]

It's much less lonely in here now.

It is. I haven't found a key though.

[Going to take a look at that trunk and pack finally.]

True. But there are other rooms, if it is not here.

[ The trunk is simple, unadorned wood, but for a brass plaque that reads "Lucky" on the front. The simple canvas pack is stuffed full and leaning against it. ]

[She'll move them over closer to the couch before taking a look inside them.]

Yeah. It'd be too easy to find it in the first room I checked.

It would be a lucky thing.

[ The chest smells strongly of wood, and is mostly empty. An inner shelf holds a stuffed duck that looks like it’s been well-loved, a glass vial of water with an amethyst ribbon, a sheet of gold star stickers (with five remaining), and a little bag of 5 cookies.

In the bag you find a set of Amethyst's Wonderland uniforms, a set of their winter Camelot uniforms, and a hand-knit scarf in amethyst-purple. ]

[She nods and straightens.]

I guess it's the next room for us. Come on.

[And heading back to the hallway and the second door.]
