[ The dusty-framed photograph is of a very handsome man with pale skin, and tousled dark hair that has bands of brown in it, like a tabby's coat. His eyes are piercing green, he has cat-like slit pupils, and pointed ears. All in all, even without the more obvious unnatural traits, he doesn't look quite human. He's smiling roguishly at the camera.
When you touch the frame, the room briefly fills with the scent of musk and pennyroyal.
The less-dusty photograph is of a woman who looks nearly identical to Lucky. Her features are slightly less angular, her hair is cropped short and layered, with the top layer a natural brown and the underlayer dyed amethyst purple. She's grinning brightly, clearly much more outgoing than Lucky.
When you touch the frame, the room briefly fills with the scent of cotton candy and ashes. ]
[ Well, it's just sugar really. It'll probably register as burnt sugar.
There are five more framed photographs in the drawer.
On top, face-up, is a photograph of a woman with long hair and Japanese features, in a kimono, who despite seeming quite solid and real, has a watery quality about her. She is most certainly not human. Touching this photograph will briefly fill the room with the scent of hibiscus and water lilies.
Below, the other four:
A photograph of Dare, the girl from downstairs in the lobby, looking like she's trying to be tough but also trying not to laugh. Touching her photograph fills the room with the scent of apples.
A photograph of a tall man with angular, inhuman features and curly red hair, his arms wrapped around the shoulders of a small Japanese woman with multiple fox tails peeking out under her robes and a rose in her hands.
A photograph of two very little girls playing in a garden - one is slightly older, with similar features to the couple from the previous photograph and vivid red hair, and the other is slightly younger, and the other looks like the girl on the sofa.
A photograph of a woman and child, very old, the fashion speaks of the 1950s - the woman has pale blonde hair and looks like Lucky but more so, and the little girl looks very much like the girl in the previous picture, but not quite. ]
[ When you press the button, two voices start speaking. The first voice, even through the static and the poor quality of the recording, is clearly Lucky, and the second is an unidentified man. ]
Toby Daye Investigations, Toby Daye speaking, what is it now, Cliff?
[ a brief pause ] How did you know it was me?
Because the only other people who use this number are Uncle Sylvester and Ms. Winters, and they know I"m on a stakeout, which means they're not calling. [ despite the words, she sounds affectionate ] What is it this time?
Gilly wanted me to call and tell you she loves you and hopes you'll be home in time for dinner, and that you should bring back ice cream. Chocolate would be best.
She's watching you make the call, isn't she?
You better believe it. If she wasn't, I would've just called Information. But you know how she gets. She's got ears like a rabbit. [ he chuckles ] That's from your side of the family, you know.
Most good things are, but yes, she gets her hearing from me. [ there's a pause, then a whispered curse that's not quite audible ] Cliff, the guy I'm after just came out of the restaurant. I gotta go. Tell Gilly I love her, and that I promise I'll stop for ice cream on my way home.
You don't love me?
I love you more than fairy tales.
